Recognising Problem Gambling

Problem gambling does not always look the way people expect. It often develops gradually and can be difficult to recognise from the inside. The following warning signs — individually or in combination — may indicate that gambling is no longer under control:

  • Spending more money on gambling than you can afford to lose, or regularly exceeding the limits you set for yourself.
  • Chasing losses — continuing to gamble in an attempt to win back money that you have already lost.
  • Gambling with money that is set aside for essential expenses such as rent, food, or bills.
  • Spending significantly more time gambling than you intend to, or being unable to stop when you decide to.
  • Borrowing money from friends, family, or financial institutions in order to gamble.
  • Hiding your gambling activity from people close to you, or lying about how much time or money you spend gambling.
  • Neglecting personal responsibilities — work, family, or social commitments — because of gambling.
  • Feeling restless, irritable, or anxious when you try to cut down or stop gambling.
  • Using gambling as a way to escape stress, depression, anxiety, or other difficult feelings.
  • Repeatedly trying and failing to reduce or stop your gambling despite wanting to.

If any of these signs apply to you, please consider using the tools described below or reaching out to one of the support organisations listed on this page. Seeking help early makes a significant difference.

Not Sure? Take a Free Self-Assessment

GamCare and BeGambleAware offer free, anonymous online self-assessment tools. Answering a short series of questions takes about two minutes and can help you understand whether your gambling habits warrant attention.

Tools Available at JackPoker

JackPoker provides a range of responsible gambling tools that can be activated through your account settings. These tools are designed to keep gambling within the limits you set. To access them, log in to your account and navigate to the Responsible Gambling section, or contact JackPoker support directly at jack-poker.com/support.

Deposit Limits Set a daily, weekly, or monthly cap on how much you can deposit. Limits take effect immediately; increases are subject to a cooling-off period.
Loss Limits Restrict the maximum amount you can lose over a defined period. Once reached, further play is paused until the limit resets.
Session Time Limits Set a maximum continuous session length. When the limit is reached, you will be automatically logged out regardless of game state.
Session Reminders Receive periodic on-screen notifications showing how long you have been playing and your net win/loss position during the session.
Take a Break Temporarily suspend your account for a defined period (24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, or longer). Your account cannot be re-opened until the break expires.
Self-Exclusion Permanently close your account for a minimum period of 6 months. During self-exclusion you will not receive any marketing communications from JackPoker.
Account Closure Request permanent account closure at any time. Any remaining balance will be returned to you via your original deposit method after the required verification checks.
Reality Check Enable periodic pop-up prompts that show your current session duration and invite you to decide whether to continue playing or stop.

Reductions to any limit take effect immediately. Increases to deposit or loss limits are subject to a 24-hour or longer reflection period, depending on the jurisdiction. To activate self-exclusion or account closure, contact JackPoker support directly — these cannot be reversed once active.

Underage Gambling Prevention

JackPoker is strictly an 18+ platform. No person under the age of 18 — or the legal gambling age in their jurisdiction, whichever is higher — is permitted to create an account or participate in any real-money game or tournament.

Age verification is required before any withdrawal can be processed and may be required at the point of registration. JackPoker may request identity documents including proof of date of birth. Accounts found to be held by underage individuals will be closed immediately and any associated funds forfeited.

If you share a device or household with a minor who may be at risk of accessing gambling sites, we strongly recommend installing parental control or device filtering software. The following free options are widely used and effective:

  • Gamban — blocks gambling sites on all devices linked to your account. Available for PC, Mac, iOS, and Android. Visit gamban.com.
  • Net Nanny — general parental control software with gambling site filtering.
  • Gamstop (UK only) — self-exclusion service that blocks access to all UK-licensed gambling operators simultaneously. Visit gamstop.co.uk.

You are responsible for ensuring that minors in your household cannot access your gambling account or any gambling website. Never share your login credentials with others, and always log out after each session on shared devices.

Resources for Families

Problem gambling affects not just the person gambling, but also their family members, friends, and partners. If someone close to you is struggling with gambling, the following resources are specifically designed for family members and loved ones:

  • GamCare — offers dedicated support for friends and family members affected by someone else's gambling. Live chat and helpline at gamcare.org.uk.
  • Gam-Anon — a fellowship for friends and family members of problem gamblers. Meetings available worldwide at gam-anon.org.
  • Gamban — if you want to prevent a family member from accessing gambling sites on shared or household devices, Gamban software at gamban.com provides multi-device blocking.
  • Gambling Therapy — provides online support specifically tailored to family members at gamblingtherapy.org.

Supporting someone with a gambling problem can be emotionally draining. These organisations understand what you are going through and can offer practical guidance on how to help, how to protect your own finances, and how to look after your own wellbeing.

Playing Responsibly

If you enjoy gambling and want to keep it that way, the following practices help most players stay in control:

  • Set a budget before you play and treat it as an entertainment cost, not an investment. Only gamble with money you can genuinely afford to lose.
  • Set a time limit as well as a money limit. Decide in advance how long you will play and stick to it regardless of whether you are winning or losing.
  • Never gamble when you are stressed, upset, or under the influence of alcohol. These states impair judgement and increase the likelihood of making decisions you will regret.
  • Take regular breaks during sessions. A five-minute pause every hour helps you maintain perspective and avoid getting drawn into extended play.
  • Do not chase losses. Accepting a loss and walking away is always the correct decision once your budget is reached.
  • Treat wins as a bonus, not an expectation. The house edge and rake ensure that gambling is not a reliable source of income over the long term.
  • Use the tools available in your account — deposit limits, session reminders, and reality checks — to reinforce the limits you set for yourself.
